This time of year things can get mighty slow and look bleak but don’t give up. As soon as temps trend to warm the bridges will come to life and also the shallows of Lake Catherine. I typically like to start focusing on the south end of the trestle for the first surge of late winter trout. A lot of times February starts to warm the winter waters, typically the Pearl River is high making the South end of the Lake typically more salty. The Chalmette wall area tends to slow down as we reach the end of the winter and I like to begin putting my spring pattern together. Once water temps hit 60 degrees then spring tactics go right into play. Another thing we love to do this time of year is begin our quest for evasive crappie. Crappie is one of our absolute favorite species to target this time of year as their spawn is just before trout and they are typically charged up in February. The Matrix Mini is dynamite under a cork or jigging it deep on our mini golden eyes from MatrixShad.com, now we don’t have a lot of spots to target crappie as its far from our expertise but if you know an area that has them, now is the time to fish for them. The pearl is a great place but it is high at the moment so wait for it to get under 12 feet.
