Happy new year to all and lets start this year off talking fishing cold weather. Water temps will stay in the 50’s and 60’s over the next few weeks and here is some areas you should target. The number one area every one will be targeting is the Great Wall of Chalmette. This is a winter wonderland and a great place to master in the winter. You can fish deep jigs using a Matrixshad up against the wall itself or you can fish suspended jerk baits such as the Matrix Rip shad and Minnow up along the rocks of the MRGO from the wall all the way down to Violet. For bigger trout work the hard baits over the rocks. If water temps warm on a hard warming trend make sure to keep an eye on the Pontchartrain bridges. Bites may be far and few between but the quality of the fish will be hard to beat. On very cold days and the trout don’t want to cooperate simply focus on red fish. They will gang up near the wall in Chalmette especially the two Lock systems that fall out into the MRGO. When you find the reds you will catch more than you ever want to see on these brutally cold days. Simply slow roll a Matrix on a 1/2 oz Golden Eye on the bottom on these frigid days. January and February can be tuff but certainly productive if fished correctly. Spring is right around the corner so easier days are coming but do not put the poles up until then. This is one of my favorite times of the year as you have the entire Lake to your self.
