During this post we are going to give a list of a lot of decent sub-spots for fishing Lake Pontchatrain as we enter our most crowded months. We all know the crowds on the Lake can be a night mare so lets go over some good tips for making worth while even in the big crowds. First off if possible weekdays play hooky from work “If Possible”. — If you were ever looking for a wild seen with fisherman go to the south end of the trestle on a slick calm april or may saturday around 830am, it can get pretty wild. If you show up to the south end of trestle and there is 50 boats down there and people are tolling big engines, throwing anchors and piled up on one another; well you missed the bite that morning and the fish are long gone. If you must fish on a saturday and the only place you know where a few fish are is the south end of trestle you better be there early. Nine out of Ten times 95% of the fish you catch that day will be before 7am so don’t be afraid to get to the spot with the sun still below the horizon yes “In the Dark” Get the first drift of Daylight— When expecting big crowds on the bridge get out there in the dark and the first 2 drifts that morning are going to be your key to success. Once you see that bite diminish because of pressure usually around 8am you should have 75% of your catch that morning and now its time to hit what we call “Sub-Spots” and pick off another few fish; 2 here 3 there and build the box and get away form the chaos you left on the bridge. Sub-Spots— Here is a good list of some Lake Pontchartrain “Sub-Spots” to help build the box and avoid crowds at the same time. -Chef Rocks—————————RockShore Line Between Chef and Irish Bayou. SW Winds Best -Little Ceder—————————Eastern Shoreline of Lake near Chef Pass. -Hospital Wall————————RockWall near mouth of Rigolets. Can Produce Mule Trout. -Twin Span High Rise—————-North End of Twin Span big cement blocks and stay in the shade. -Corners of Twin Span and Hwy 11–Fish at Tide Change -North Shoreline———————-From Car Drive to Cane Bayou. NE winds best look for mullets. -Shell Pads and Reefs—————-The old rigs in front of Lacombe and new Artificial Reefs. Google Coordinates. -Causeway—————————-19 mile run nice to avoid boats on slick calm days. 10-14 miles out. Afternoon Incoming Tides— Trout on the trestle seem to really favor incoming tides during April and May. Look for incoming tides to be more often in the afternoon when SE winds begin to take over. The stiffer winds tend to keep boats off the water and accelerate incoming tides in the Lake which tend to trigger a more aggressive bite on the trestle. Less boats with better incoming tides equals hungry specks. Check out latest video on DockSide TV as we were fishing the North Shoreline of Lake Poncthartrain.
