Well what a wild spring we have jumped into. From the most swollen Pearl River I may have ever recalled, to a pandemic requiring a 30 day quarantine and why not throw another Bonnett Carre Spillway opening to boot. Well the saying “It can’t get any worse” I think holds pretty true for the beginning of 2020. On a positive note gas is the same price as it was 25 years ago and most of us are off work allow many cheap fishing trips during this crisis.
So where are the specks and what should you target during the quarantine? Well this spring started out with a nice surge of trout hitting Matrix Mullets and Matrix Floats in the southern part of Lake Catherine. Our TKO Shrimp Creole colored shrimp was on fire for a while in Catherine and should still produce for the next few weeks. We did just recently start catching a few trout on the Trestle in eastern Lake Pontchartrain. After a terrible March for Pontchartrain, the big lake finally started mixing in some cleaner water and producing some decent trout catches. One area that gets looked over big time this time of year is Lake Borgne. All of the structures in Borgne can be great this time of year but they usually are under the radar due to the traffic of the trestle. Well with all the fresh water this year Lake Borgne very well could out fish Lake Pontchartrain again. You want to head east on flooded years not west. Hoping for the Causeway to be the bridge of the early part of this century is simply wishful thinking.
During this time of year we start doing a lot of 3/8 golden eye jig heads paired with a Matrix Shad. Targeting structures in 8-15 foot of water we simply bounce this rig combination on the bottom. Through into the tide and work the lure back with the tide for a more natural presentation. Here is a list of videos below that will go into further detail of just what to do during the rest of your quarantine.
