Well our annual spring speckled trout run is coming to a close in the conventional Lake Pontchatrain spots but it is not completely over just yet. The day this “Tip of the Week” was written we made a quick run to the bridges and caught several trout on Matrix Shad. The action was consistent but the size of the trout was not. We fished the trestle and the Highway 11 bridge for a few hours on a nice falling tide and caught several trout the only problem was most of them were throw backs. The good news is that the ones we that were keepers were really nice up to 20 inches but the amount of 10 inch trout was very odd. The good thing is that the lake did have trout and plenty of them which is a good sign for things to come for the fall run. If you are looking for something quick and easy and catch enough for dinner the trestle may be as far as your need to go. If you are trying to fill up the box you may need a different approach.

If loading the box with specks is the objective I suggest very early starts, get to the marina in the dark and get some live bait. A long boat ride may also be in the forecast. All the well heads in Lake Borgne will stay pretty productive this month and catching limits are very possible of 14-20″ specks. If live bait is not your thing but you still want limits than a change in species may be in store for you. The Purple Haze and Spartacus Vortex Shad on a 5/16 oz golden eye Jig Head is all you need. Instead of cheating specks, change your focuses onto redfish. All of the marshes surrounding the Rigolets from the Lake Catherine to the ICW are close and consistent. If you really want to bump up your odds take a ride to the Biloxi Marsh and load the boat with these bronze beauties.
Redfish will eat Vortex and Matrix Shad all summer
June is still a pretty solid month with a lot of great options.
