“The Legend”
Drake Champagne was arguably the most knowledgeable fisherman that ever walked on all fours. Drake was a very loving dog that had a great life with most of his days being on the water. One thing I can almost guarantee is that this pup holds the record for most hours on a boat as a chihuahua. Drake’s earlier days of his life started off as the greater of Dockside Bait and Tackle as he was up every morning at 5am ready to sell live shrimp to Pontchartrain fisherman. After several years of being the bait shop pup he started spending more and more time on the water in the boats and transitioned into what would be known as the Dockside TV mascot for matrixshad.com
One of my most memorable stories of Drake was on Black Friday 2011, the air temperature low that morning 19 degrees and the trout were biting all week. Captain Kris pulled up to Dockside to pick up live shrimp early in the blistering cold that morning. Drake loved captain kris and knew his boat specifically, and Drake wanted to go fishing. He wanted to go so bad he jumped into Kris’s boat as he was docking the only problem was he was a little too eager and miss timed his jump and fell into the drink, and splash. Needless to say during a super busy morning I had to stop all business and put the customers on hold so we could warm drake up. After 30 minutes of holding him over the heater in a towel he was back to normal. It was an eventful morning as his entire life was.
It’s been a tough week for us here at Matrix Shad loosing our little buddy but we still have Reggie who is set out to break all of Drake’s fishing records. For all our friends and family that was able to spend time with Drake over the years, thank you as he loved all the attention.
