May is considered by many to be the easiest month of the year to target speckled trout. April winds start subsiding along with rainy fronts. Water temps rise to a favorable 75 degrees and speckled trout can be caught many different ways. The bigger trout start their migration out to saltier waters during the month of may so if you plan to stay close in Pontchartrain you may be left catching smaller male trout if salinities stay low. The big girls will start moving toward the islands chains out in the Mississippi sound. Not to worry though as plenty of beautiful trout are still around the Pontchartrain basin and easy to catch. Trout are very eager to eat in May and relatively easy to find. The bridges will certainly still produce but I favor the rigs in Lake Borgne. If you find a shoreline holding nice trout they will crush a topwater early in the mornings in May. SeaBrook used to be the no doubt place to be in May but the closure of the MRGO has made that a thing of the past. Options are unlimited in May and a your favorite Matrix Shad on a 3/8 oz Golden Eye will be very effective no matter what structure or choke point you may find. May is one of the easiest months and a great time to bring kids to catch their first ever speckled trout.
