This may be my absolute favorite time of year. Temperatures drop, playoff baseball starts, football season is in full swing and speckled trout come to life. Let’s talk about what the fish are going to do this month before they move to the bridges next month. The trout are going to seek out grass flats along Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Catherine. Top water baits like the Matrix Mullet and the suspended jerk baits like the Matrix Rip Shad will be go to baits especially early in the mornings. Once the sun gets up the TKO shrimp under a Matrix Float is hard to beat. Other areas that come to life is every natural bayou and man made canal on the north shore of the lake. From Bayou Lacombe all the way to Gohegan’s canal hold schools and schools of specks and white trout during this entire month. I really like to fish these deeper canals or bayous using the Matrix Minnow. The Matrix Minnow dives down deeper than the rips had and can get down to those suspended fish. If you want to dig deep in the marsh, deep bayous with swift currents connecting duck ponds are also great areas to target specks. If you go deep inside the marsh I would again use the Matrix Float above the TKO shrimp which all can be found at your local retailers or at MatrixShad.com is your online. I sure hope you saved up some sick days because now is the time to use them and get those boats in the water.
