Now is the time to look up into the sky rather than down into the water. Every year in the Pontchartrain basin during this time of year birds start working on the shrimp that the reds are pushing up to the surface. If you catch the right flock of birds you will catch big trout mixed in with the reds. Salinity is at all time high during this part of the season and large white shrimp pile into the lake from Chef Pass all the way to Manchac Pass and it drives the red fish crazy. Break out the Matrix Shad, Matrix Floats and top waters and have the time of your life over the next 4 weeks. The phenomenon happens all over the Gulf Coast during this time period so keep your eyes peeled for large fat seagulls flying around with bellies full of 20 count shrimp.
Play the wind to your advantage this time of year. If its hard out the north focus on the northern end of the lake. If an big easterly wind kicks up stick to eastern shorelines and the same goes with southerly flows. If a big front comes through pushing a hard north west well just set up a tee time. While all this entertainment is taking place the trout will begin their migration and set up along the bridge pilling all across Lake Pontchatrain. Matrix and Vortex Shad on a 3/8oz Golden Eye Jig Head or under a Matrix Float will yield great catches all through November.
Make sure to watch all of our DockSide TV episodes on chasing the birds to see just how great this action can be. Make sure to book your charters early as we fill up quick for the fall.
