Well what do you know, we get into the ALCS and NLCS right before the World Series and the big trout have magically popped up on the bridges. Is it because they just love baseball? Well maybe but here is my theory. When Autumn approaches World Series time it typically means the spawn is about over which tells trout they can move to the inside as they don’t necessarily need to be around the saltiest of waters. Also water temps start flittering with the magical 70 degree mark which puts bait fish on the bridge pilings making the trout hide behind them to ambush their prey. During this time period we can somewhat predict where these big trout will be. Also the first run of these “World Series Trout’ are quite impressive in size. Catches of 20-40 trout all close to twenty inches is not farfetched. As we go further into the fall it typically gets even better as we approach Thanksgiving time.
How to target these mule trout lurking the bridges? Well here at MatrixShad.com we certainly start off by throwing our favorite Matrix products by making sure we have a jig head heavy enough to get the bait to the bottom. One of my personal favorite lures to through is the Mega Matrix, our four inch size lure to entice strikes from these abnormally larger trout. Fluorocarbon line like our Matrix Flouro is a must. These big trout have great vision, they are smart and the waters typically stay very clean. Another solid method to catch these lunkers is trolling. Simply put your boat in motion from 1.5 mph to 2.5 mph and drag your lures behind the boat. Typically lead line which is a weighted line helps keep the lure near the bottom. You typically want to fish the down current side of the bridge and avoid the day and day after a cold front mainly avoiding westerly winds which dirty the lake.
All of the bridges that cross Lake Pontchartrain come to life when water temps hit the magical 70 degree mark so do not think it is only the trestle. When the word gets out the trestle gets packed and the best thing to do is simply move over to the other bridges avoiding boat pressure and targeting fish that have not seen 1000 lures that week.
Falling tides seem to be best in the fall and also keep a close eye out for seagulls diving this time of year. If you find yourself out there in the middle of tide change simply move to the far south end of the highway 11 bridge or the Twin Span as the tide always has flow there. If you were ever wanting to catch one worthy of a mount for your trophy room there is no better time than now.
