Well easy street should slow some as what we call suicide month is over. We call May suicide month due to the simplicity of filling coolers. Now as we get into June water temps rise fishing changes some and trout start seeking saltier waters. I’m not saying June is a hard month I’m just saying it’s not as easy as May. I still love June as it typically has mild winds and good fishing. Look for the Pontchartrain bridges to still hold some trout but don’t expect many of those big girls to hang around as they usually shrink in June. Look for all the shell pads and well heads to be the premier areas to target in Lake Borgne. Also if you are really wanting to take a ride go even farther east and head to the islands east of the Biloxi Marsh. The further east you go the saltier the waters will get and the bigger the trout will be.
I personally don’t make far rides just because the trout moved east. I’ll hit some Lake Borgne rigs if it’s super calm but I don’t like the 4am starts and long boat rides as I typically wait patiently for the trout to move to our backyards again in the fall. What I like to do is get a relativity early start and stay close in our local marshes and sight fish red fish. I love the matrix craw for sight fishing reds this time of year as I target grassy ponds and look for big floating slot reds.
When picking out the right day to try out sight fishing pick the sunniest of days. Find some duck ponds holding nice grass and clean water. Keep you eyes peeled for floating sting rays and sheepshead and they live together with the red fish. If you do this often like myself make sure so sign up for the STAR tourney and pitch that crawfish at every big sheepshead you see. If you’re lucky enough to have one bite your lure it will be a contender for first place.
Good luck out there and until next time,
Good Fishin’
