This year has certainly been a strange one. Record amounts of fresh water, two openings of the spillway and not a trout around for months. One thing that has excelled is red fish. Small perfect grilling size red fish have came into the area in full force. The man made canals on the northern end of the Lake Pontchartrain has harbored reds all summer and I have no idea why. They simply will not leave the canals and the action on somedays is incredible. With talks of algae blooms as we are still fighting an open Bonnet Carre Spillway, I have no idea what to expect for the rest of the year. I used to be able to predict this fishery but here the last several years we just have to go fishing and see what’s going on. One thing I can promise is that small reds are taking over the fishery, inhaling matrix shads and these little reds taste great on the grill.
