Most anglers are thrilled to catch trout period and when they are catching 2 and 3 pounders on the trestle they are more than excited. For trophy trout hunters like myself I’m always looking for the biggest and best thing out there. I think we all know by now the trestle, Causeway ect are on fire but a 4 pounder is typically your max on the areas full of boats and full of fish.
The real trophy trout typically exclude themselves from the crowd as they don’t want the competition for food. They will branch off and get with other trout of their class and take over an area. If you’re wanting to catch one for the wall don’t get stuck on the community holes. The Hwy 11 bridge is a prime example of where to find one over five pounds. Another place we have found them this year for the first time is the reefs they made with the old twin span. These reefs are full of snags and a pain to fish but monsters are lurking on it. Always be moving around looking for that special breed of fish if you want a trophy.
Monster trout typically will be close to where the 2-3 pounders are hanging but not with them in the school. They are loners. If you get several cold fronts the Chalmette wall will be full of pretty trout but the real big ones branch off and roam the MRGO rocks away from the crowds of boats and fish.
To target them on the reefs or other bridges beside the trestle the MEGA Matrix is the best on a 4/0 jig head heavy enough to keep contact with the bottom. As far as the mrgo big girls there is no better way to target them than hard plastic jerk baits like our Matrix Minnow and Ripshad. Don’t let the cold weather fool you. Some of our biggest trout come in the winter just ask Capt Kenny Kreeger who boated a 12 pounder on January 31st.
