This time of year is all about finding white shrimp skipping across the waters while you are out fishing. If you are lucky the seagulls will tell you right where they are. Whats happening is that speckled trout are in schools driving the white shrimp up to the surface where they begin to jump out the water to escape from being eaten. When seagulls see this they too swoop down to eat the shrimp. The last few years we have been seeing fabulous runs of white shrimp in the early fall and speckled trout follow them around. The key is to always keep your eyes peeled when running the boat for them. Hot spots for schooling white shrimp is the canals and bayous on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain also the south eastern region of Lae P itself. Mud Lake and Lake Catherine are also notorious for having birds diving on shrimp this time of year. If you find shrimp skipping out the water always start off with a Matrix Mullet Topwater, this will yield the biggest trout in the school. If the trout are running a little small switch to a TKO shrimp creole under a Matrix Float and also try tight lining a Matrix Shad on a lighter Golden Eye jig head and simply swim the lure through the shrimp school. Always cast your lure right where you see a shrimp jump and work the lure close to the surface even if its 10-20 foot of water. Chasing shrimp will be the name of the game the next 8 weeks so get ready and a set of binoculars is never a bad idea to keep on the boat to help see the birds hovering around.
