We are finally out of the windiest month of the year. Cold front after cold front, high rivers and dirty water, March can be a frustrating month but April is now here and things are on the up and up. The best part of April is that it is speckle trout spawning season. More record breaking trout have been caught in the month of April than any other. Specks have to gorge them selves and fatten up in order to lay their eggs. This process makes catching monster trout the easiest month of the year to accomplish such a feat. The best place to do this is across all the bridges of Lake Pontchartrain. On light tide days use a 3/8oz Golden eye and a 1/2 oz on faster tide days. Pick out your favorite Matrix Shad, mine personally this time of the year is the “Finger Mullet” X Shad paired with a 1/2 oz Golden Eye Screw Lock. Focus on the southern part of the bridges on south winds and the northern parts on north winds. Most optimal conditions is a light SE wind with a light falling tide until around 8am. Make sure to avoid the bridges on a west wind day and don’t pass up windy afternoons out of the South and East with hard incoming tides and the trout can really fire up when tides rise in the spring time as thats when the lake is filling up with bait. Best water clarity is about 2 feet but as long as you can see about 10 inches down trout can be caught along the bridges. Do not focus solely on the Train Bridge as every bridge from the Causeway to the Twin Span fires off in April. Focus on the full moon and new moon and get ready for the opportunity to land the biggest trout of your life.
